The Monroe County Sheriff Reserve
like any other Law Enforcement agency requires dedication and
commitment to the profession. As a Police Officer you will be required to
keep a professional appearance and attitude at all times (on and off duty).
You will be expected to perform your duties with the utmost proficiency. You
will be expected to work various kinds of details and work in many different
situations that you may or may not enjoy.
Although the Department will issue your uniforms, much of the equipment
needed to perform as a police officer you will be required to purchase on
your own. This includes but is not limited to:
- Firearm
- Leather Duty Gear
- Flashlights
- Baton/Pepper Spray
- Handcuffs
- Brown Leather Shoes/boots (polishable)
- Gloves
- Traffic Safety Vest
Though you are required to purchase all of this equipment (and more), you
need not buy it all at once. You will have time to buy the equipment a
little at a time.
Remember, we are a not-for-profit organization. Working for this department
is strictly a volunteer status with NO financial compensation.
If you are accepted into the unit you will start out as a Probationary
officer for two years. During this time you will attend a lengthy training
academy before being sworn in as a Police Officer. Each Academy begins in
March with the Pre-Basic and then moves on into Training Academy in April.
The schedule is as follows:
- The 40hr Pre-Basic: The 40hr Pre-Basic consists of both
and homework and in class training. The classes cover both defensive
tactics and firearms training. The in class training is on Tuesdays and
Thursdays from 6:00pm to 10:00pm with one Saturday for qualification with
firearms. Plan on being at these classes for the entire time period. These
classes are mandatory and can not be missed. No exceptions can be made and
you will not be able to swear in as a Police Officer until you have
completed the 40hr Pre-Basic.
- MCAP Academy: The academy is over 180 hours of study in Law
Enforcement Basic Training and Instructions. These classes are
Primarily on Tuesday and Thursday nights from 6:00pm to 10:00pm. There
will also be some Saturday classes which are usually field events. Each
officer that completes the academy will go before the Merit Board then be
sworn in.
- FTO Phase: During the FTO Phase, officers will work on
the road with MCAP and MCSD Field Training Officers through 4
phases. Each phase which is 40hrs long will consist of critical
evaluations of the Probationary officer's ability to function as a Police
Officer. As a Probationary officer moves into the next phase he/she is
expected to perform police functions with less dependence on their FTO to
help them. Probationary officers can only move up the phases once their
Field Training Officer believes he/she is ready to move on to the next
training stage
If you have read this page and understand what is expected from you, then
